The decrease of theophylline clearance by acute ethanol intoxication

Abstract

|
The effect of ethanol ingestion on drug metabolism appear paradoxic. Chronic ethanol administration induce increase of liver metabolism but acute ethanol intoxication decrease liver metabolism. Theophylline undergoes extensive metabolism(above about 80% of total dose). The metabolism of theophylline involves hepatic microsomal enzyme and xanthine oxidase. Thus theophylline metabolism may be affected by acuted ethanol intoxication.
The case report of 59 years old bronchial asthma (Korean male) showes significant reduction of theophylline clearance as much as 36.7% acute ethanol intoxication.
